Death Claims C.A. Holmer, Pioneer Grocer

Charles August Holmer, 81, early day Aberdeen grocer and prominent Mason, died yesterday at a local hospital after an extended illness.

Born June 22, 1877 in Mellerud, Sweden, Mr Holmer came to the United States and Dallas, Ore., in 1893. He arrived in Aberdeen in 1894. In 1895 he went to work for the Larson & Winder Grocery store and later for Larson & Wheeler. On February 16 1898 he entered the grocery business with Carl Gabrielson. The Gabrielson-Holmer store, located on Heron Street near H Street, was operated by the partners until 1921. After leaving the retail business Mr Holmer represented the Allen & Lewis Wholesale Grocery company of Portland for five years. Later he operated a private auto finance company and during World War II was a shipping clerk for the Boeing Airplane company plant in Aberdeen.

Life Member

Mr Holmer was a life member of a number of Masonic bodies - Aberdeen lodge 52, F&AM; Westshore chapter 13, Royal Arch Masons, Afifi temple of the Shrine and Rhododendron chapter 45, Order of Eastern Star. He also belonged to De-Molai commandery no. 6, Knights Templar. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Sweden but attended the Episcopal Church with Mrs Holmer.

He was married September 12, 1905 in Aberdeen to Ida May Moar who survives at the home, 202 East Eighth Street. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews in this country and in Sweden.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Whiteside Chapel with the Rev Norris Twitchell officiating. Concluding rites will be at Fern Hill Cemetery.
