He lived with his parents in Speldhurst when he was very young.[3]
In 1891, he was still living with his parents in Speldhurst and already working as a school teacher although he was only 17 years old.[4] This was the profession which he followed for the rest of his life.
in 1899, as reported in a newspaper at the time, he was appointed a headmaster:
Mr Ernest H. Holmwood, senior assistant master for the last four years at All Saint's Boys' School, has been appointed headmaster of the contemplated St. Luke's Boys' School. During his connection with All Saint's School Mr Holmwood has earned for himself the esteem and respect of both scholars and teachers, whose good wishes he carried with him to his new sphere of labour.
Ernest married Laura Rawlings on 1 Jan 1900 at St Paul's church in Rustall.[6][7] They had two children.
An account of the wedding was given in the newspaper:
A pretty wedding took place at At Paul's Church, on Monday last, the contracting parties being Mr Ernest Holmwood, second son of Mr and Mrs H. Holmwood, the The Harmony, Rusthall, and Miss Laura Rawlings ... The bridegroom is also wel-known among the scholastic profession in Tunbridge Wells and the neighbourhood, as well as in Maidstone, where he holds the appointment of Head Master of St. Luke's School. ... The wedding breakfast was afterwards given at The Harmony, and later in the day Mr and Mrs Ernest Holmwood left to spend the honeymoon at Folkestone.
In 1914, he joined the Teachers Registration Council.[11]
On 7 Nov 1916, he was made a Special Constable as reported in the newspaper:
At Maidstone Police Court on Tuesday, two distinct groups of Special Constables were sworn in, the first, numbering close upon 40, under the Municipal Corporations Act, and the other, under the Defence of the Realm Act. To the first the Mayor said he thought they understood they were to act only in case of any exceptional occasion; they would only be called up in case of riot or such like event, under the fiat of the Mayor. ... The names of those taking the oath were as follows:-- Municipal Specials:-- ... Ernest Harry Holmwood, St. Luke's Road ...
[12] These constables were needed as many of the regular police were called away to active service in the First World War.
On 9 Jul 1926, Ernest received an MBE. The newspaper reported:
In the list of Honours conferred on the occasion of the King's Birthday, that of "M.B.E." is bestowed upon Mr. Ernest Harry Holmwood, for services rendered as Honorary Secretary of Maidstone Savings Committee. ... Mr. Holmwood has promoted the investment of a very large sum in the original "War Savings" Certificates issued in 1916, and in the continued issue of "National Savings" Certificates since the war.
Ernest Harry Holmwood died on 7 Feb 1937 in Maidstone.[15][16] He was 63 years old.
The newspaper reported:
FUNERAL OF M.B.E.--On Thursday, Mr. Ernest H. Holmwood (63), of St. Luke's road, who died in hospital on Sunday, was buried. Mr. Holmwood retired from the headmastership of North Borough School six months ago owing to ill-health. He was awarded the M.B.E. for his work in the National Savings movement, particularly among children.
