Biography

Thomas was the only son of Francis Holyoake and his wife Judith. He was baptised 12 January 1617, Southam, Warwickshire.[1]

Thomas was educated at Queen's College, Oxford University where he matriculated 9 November 1632, aged 16. He was awarded BA 5 July 1636 and MA 16 May 1639.[2] He was a royalist and captain of a foot company of mainly undergraduates. For his service he was awarded DD by Charles I.

Thomas practiced medicine and also had religious appointments including as Rector of Whitnash, Warwickshire 1662.[3]

Thomas and his wife Anne had 12 children.[4] These included

  • Francis born 24 September, baptised 16 October 1646, Southam, Warwickshire.[5] buried 22 September 1656, Warwick, Warwickshire.[6]

  • Charles baptised 25 Oct 1653, Warwick, Warwickshire.[7]
  • Newton baptised 20 October 1662, Warwick, Warwickshire[8]
  • Henry
  • Elizabeth, married Joseph Durnford
  • Ann baptised 4 May 1664, Warwick, Warwickshire.[9]
  • Oliver buried 10 November 1675 Warwick, Warwickshire.[10]
  • George buried 24 March 1675 in Warwick, Warwickshire.[11]

Thomas continued his father's work on 'A large Dictionary in three parts' which was finally published by his son Charles in 1676.[12]

He died in Hampshire 10 June 1675 and was buried near his father at Warwick 16 June 1675.[4][13]

Research Notes

Francis and Judith had an earlier son also named Thomas, buried 26 December 1616 shortly before this Thomas was baptised.[14]
