Biography

Elizabeth (Honour) Cox was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Elizabeth was born in 1710 in Wing, Buckinghamshire, England, the daughter of William and Anne Honour, and was baptised in Wing on 10 May 1710. ^[1]

On 31 December 1732 Elizabeth married Henry Cox at Linslade, Buckinghamshire. In the marriage records her residence was listed as Leighton, probably meaning Leighton Buzzard, a town just over the county boundary in Bedfordshire. Her spouse’s residence was Heath, this may be the village of Heath and Reach, just north of Leighton Buzzard, or it may be an obsolete term for an area in or near Wing. ^[2] The couple had several children, of which the following are confirmed by baptismal records: Francis (1734 ^[3]), John (1736 ^[4], died 1738 ^[5]), Ann (1740 ^[6]), Elizabeth (1742 ^[7]), Mary 1743 and William (1747^[8]) . There are probably others that died in early infancy.

Elizabeth was mentioned in her father's will: "To Elizabeth the wife of Henry Cox of Tatnall one chest of drawers now standing in my lodging room…". Also her eldest son, Francis, was to receive the sum of 5 guineas. ^[9]

Elizabeth died in Wing in 1788 and was buried there on 28 February, being described in the Parish Register as "Elizabeth Cox of Leighton". ^[10]

Research Notes

At this time the spelling of "Honor" seem to differ with each record, probably depending on whoever was the parish priest or clerk at the time. Some records cite "Honour" or "Honnor". In this case "Honour" is used as it appears in the baptism record.
