Biography

Sara Delephene Hontz was born in Sweet Valley, Ross, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, on 26 May 1875 to Jasper Joshua Hontz (1849-1922) and Sara Fowler (1855-1875).[1] She was named after Sara Delphine Edwards Major (1851-1919), her father's first cousin.[2]

On 21 June, 1893, she married Michael John Kocher.[3]

"Mrs. Sara Hontz Kocher, 59, wife of Michael John Kocher of Harvey's Lake, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Whitesell, Saturday, after a few days illness. Mrs. Kocher was born March 27, 1875, at Sweet Valley, daughter of Jasper and Sarah (Fowler) Hontz. She married on June 21, 1893. She was a member of the Christian Church of Sweet Valley and a woman of high character and lovable disposition. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Oscar Whitesell of Roaring Brook, Mrs. Harry Cisco of Dallas, A. Rodell Kocher of Meeker, Mrs. Ethel Shupp, Mrs. William Hillard, Roger, Jasper, Leona, Dorman and Dean, at home; Violet and Mrs. Clifford Boothe of New York City."[4]

"With scores of friends and relatives paying final tribute to her memory the funeral of Mrs. Sara Hontz Kocher was held on Tuesday afternoon from the family home at Harvey's Lake. The large attendance and the many floral offerings attested the high esteem in which Mrs. Kocher was held in the community. Services were conducted at the residence with the Rev. Arthur Hontz, pastor of the Pentecostal Mission at West Nanticoke, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Shell, pastor of the Pentecostal Church, Harvey's Lake, officiating. The hymns 'It Is Well With My Soul,' and 'Sunrise Tomorrow,' were sung. Flower carriers were Eleanor Whitesell, Meryl Kocher, Hazel Meeker, Grant Whitesell, Glenn Kocher, Kenneth Kocher, Eugene Kocher, and Naomi Shupp, all grandchildren of the deceased. Casket bearers were Rodell, Roger, Jasper, Dorman and Deane Kocher, sons of the deceased and Arlo Meeker, grandson. Burial was in the Kocher Cemetery at Harvey's Lake."[5]
