Fred Bertram was born in 1899. He was the son of Charles Hopping and Mary Philps. [1]. He passed away in 1916[2]. He had lied about his age in order to enlist for World War 1 with his brothers, so his age at death was recorded as 21, even though he was 17 when he was killed
Bertram Hopping (service number 23/786) despite his tender age served in the Army during World War 1. He was a Private in the Wellington Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion He gave his next of kin as Charles Hopping (father), of Campbell Street, Feilding. He embarked 9 October 1915 from Wellington,aboard HMNZT 30 or HMNZT 31 or HMNZT 32 or HMNZT 33 or HMNZT 34 , the vessels Maunganui or Tahiti or Aparima or Navua or Warrimoo He enlisted as a Rifleman in C Company of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion . He was Killed in Action, 3 July 1916 at the Somme, Northern France and is buried at the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, in Armentieres, France (Grave ref I. F. 42) [3]
