Biography

John Horsburgh of Hucheonfield b. c. 1592 buried 17 February 1655 at Kailzie church. He received wadset 1617 and charter 1623 to Hucheonfield as part of the deal with the Stewarts of Shillinglaw. John was attacked by his brother Alexander in 1610 (because he took his father's part) but defended himself himself with sword. He appeared in the wappinschaw of 15 June 1627 at the burgh muir of Peebles "weil horsit, with collet, buff coat, steil bonnet with lance and sword." On 10 May 1630 John was granted license by the burgh of Peebles to pasture 200 sheep on its Easter Common. Latterly, between May 1637 and Apr 1654, he frequently served on assizes and inquests in the sheriff court of Peebles. We find him as a defender in an action over debt (May 1647) and a pursuer (Aug-Sep 1652)in the sheriff court. He m. Janet Kerr and m. ii Jean Stewart. By his mistress, Marion Robison, John had an illegitimate son Alexander Horsburgh.
