Biography

Margaret Houlihan was born about 1843 in England. She was the daughter of Robert Francis Houlihan, apparently from Ireland, and Mary Houlihan.

She migrated to New Zealand with her parents and 2 siblings on the ship Mary Ann, sailing on 26 April 1859.

On 14 July 1864, at the Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch, she married Patrick William Foley. They had at least 10 children.

In 1899/1900, she resided at 94 East Belt (later known as Fitzgerald Avenue), Linwood, Christchurch. Her widowed mother, Mary Houlihan, and her daughter Cecilia Philomena Foley, passed away at that address on 9 August 1899 and 1 March 1900 respectively.

She passed away on 3 October 1918 at her residence, 132 Fitzgerald Avenue, aged 75. She was buried at Linwood Cemetery in Christchurch with her late husband.
