Howard enlisted in the US Army on January 5, 1899 in St. Louis, Missouri.[2][3] Howard served as a private in Co I, 12th Regiment Infantry, during the Philippine phase of the Spanish American War.[4] Howard was discharged on July 28, 1903.[2]
William and Ola and their family are recorded in five different US censuses. In 1910 they were in Hughes County, OK[8] and in 1920 they are in Brown County, South Dakota.[6] By 1930 they had returned to Kay County, Oklahoma[7] where they were also recorded in 1940[9] and 1950.[10] In 1910 and 1920, William had farm-related occupations. Upon returning to Oklahoma, he listed occupations in 1930 & 1940 as working for a pipeline company, first as laborer and second as lineman. In 1950, William was retired.
Howard passed away after an extended illness in his home in Newkirk, Oklahoma.[1] He is buried next to Ola in Newkirk Cemetery located in Newkirk, Oklahoma.[4]
