Biography

Arvilla Howard was the daughter of Royal Varney Howard (1833–1916) and Eda Jane Smith (1841–1919), born on 28 Jul 1869 and raised in Long Tom and Lancaster in Lane County, Oregon. Arvilla married Glenn O Farrell Powell in 1887.[1][2]

Glenn O Farrell Powell and Arvilla Howard had the following children:

  • Ada Gertrude (Powell) Myers (1888-1975)
  • Noble Glenn Powell (1890-1936)
  • Claudia Mae (Powell) Mulholand (1891-1974)
  • Pauline B (Powell) Greybrooke (1892-1970)
Glenn and Arvilla lived in Junction, Lane County, where they had three daughters and a son. They moved to Portland sometime before 1910. Arvilla died in Portland on 17 Feb 1918 at age 48 and was buried in Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Her obituary appeared in The Oregon Daily Journal on 24 Feb 1918.[3][4][5][6][7][8]
“Mrs. Arvilla Howard Powell, a native of Smithfield, in Lane county, born July 28, 1869, died at her home, 356 forty-fourth street, February 17. She was one of a pair of twin daughters of R.V. and E.D. Jane Howard, pioneers of 1853 and 1852, respectively. Her mother's father, Daniel Smith, erected one of the first houses in Lane county which is still standing. She was married to Glenn O. Powell October 12, 1887, and to this union four children were born, all still living, Mrs. Ada G. Myers of Redlands, Cal., Noble G. Powell, Mrs. Claudia M. Mulhalland and Mrs. Paulina B. Barnes of this city. Her mother at Albany and these five brothers and seven sisters survive: Mrs. Carrie Edens of California; J.D. Howard of Seattle, Wash.; B. F. Howard of Harrisburg, Or.; Mrs. C.W. Starr; Mrs. Nora Dixon and Mrs. Mable Baker of Eugene, Or.; A. M. Howard of North Yakima, Wash.; W. V. Howard of Spokane; Mrs. J.W. Hodges of San Francisco; Mrs. George Sovern, and Mrs. Faye Meyers of this city. She was a member of the Christian church, Pythian Sisters and the Degree of Honor. Funeral services were held at the chapel of J.P. Finley & Son Thursday. Rev. R.H. Sawyer officiating. Burial was in Mt. Scott Park cemetery.”
