Biography
The son of Benjamin F. Howell (1861-1938) and Lena Adrian (1868-1942), Robert Howell was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania in 1892.[citation needed] He lived there with his family.[1][2] His siblings included:
Minnie Howell (1886-)
Sarah "Sadie" Ethel Howell (1891-1979)
Helen Howell (1893-)
Birdella E. Howell (1897-)
Robert Howell married Helen (Boughner) Grow, marrying in Luzerne County on September 18, 1916[3] and having two daughters together. They made their home in Delano Township, Pennsylvania, in Schuylkill County, where Robert worked as a machinist at the railroad shop there.[4] When he registered for the draft in 1917,[5] Robert stated that he was employed by Lehigh Valley Railroad Company as a railroad crane operator. He both lived and was employed in Delano Township. He was described as a man of medium height and build, with brown hair and grey eyes.
Robert and Helen Howell separated before 1930; that year, when the census was conducted, Robert boarded in Delano Township with Joseph and Margaret Tarn, along with other railroad workers.[6]
Robert Howell remarried in 1940, marrying Helene (Schimmelbusch) Ludden (1894-1977), the daughter of Charles W. Schimmelbusch and Lucy Lewis, marrying in Luzerne County on November 4, 1940.[7] Helene Schimmelbusch Ludden had been married previously to Thomas Francis Ludden (1896-1935), having one son with him, Carl Thomas Ludden. Thomas Howell passed away in Rush Township at the age of 62.[8]
