Edmund was born in 1855. The 1871 census shows him as a student at Haileybury College School in Hertfordshire. After finishing at Haileybury he went to King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1878. He was bracketed fifth classic and was a Member's prizeman, having won the Browne's medal for the Latin ode two years before. He was made a Fellow of King's College in 1879 and served for a short time as Assistant Master at Fettes College in Edinburgh in 1879.
