Biography

Asa and Sarah appear to have had 11 children: Richard (m. Sarah Root), Benoni, Eseck (1800-1868), Daniel, Silas (1806-1868), Allan, Pamela, Polly, Philinda, Maria, and Lucinda (1809-1891) (1, 10).

Research Notes

The birth, marriage, and death dates above are from DAR Ancestor Search (2) which, unfortunately, does not give the source. The birth (1780) and death years (1864) do not agree with the corresponding years (1801 and 1884) on Find A Grave (4) and the Northern New York Tombstone Transcription Project (7). The 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Mooers, Clinton, New York, United States (8 and 9) list a Sarah Angell who was born in Vermont with estimated birth years of 1780 and 1781 respectively. These are consistent with the DAR birth date. Asa's children appear to have been born starting around 1800 (10 and 3). Therefore it seems likely there are two possibilities: 1. Either Sarah's birth year was 1801 and Asa was married to someone before Sarah, or 2. Sarah was old enough to have have had children starting around 1800.

As far as the year she died, it is entirely possible that the death year transcribed between 1937 and 1945 as 1884 (7) was actually 1864. The typist's notes, quoted in the reference below, say that many dates may be incorrect. There is no photo of the gravestone on Find A Grave.

There is no birth year given in the transcribed grave listing (7), but her age is given as 83 (7) which would make her birth year about 1781 if 1864 was the actual death year.

Based on the information available, she was probably born in 1780 and probably died in 1864.

22 Jan 2020 Update: Find A Grave now gives her birth year as 1780. The year of death still needs further research.
