Biography

Thomas Huff Huff ... [1]

Thomas was from Arundel and served in Capt John Elden's Comp, Col Lemuel Robinson's Regt, Pay abstract for mileage, dated at Roxbury 26 Feb 1776, shows 110 miles traveling expenses to said HUFF to camp from Home, and another list prepared by Capt Elden 1 Apr 1776 also shows HUFF. Thomas was also in Lt Daniel Wheelwright's Comp with milage of 125 miles allowed 19 Aug 1776. Also Capt John Wentworth's Comp, Col Aaron Willard's Regt, pay allowances from home to Bennington, 302 miles, dated Jan 1777 at Boston. Also, Capt Abel Moniton's Comp, Col Jonathan Titcomb's Regt, service from 19 May 1777 to 18 Jul 1777, 61 days at Rhode Island, mileage 320 miles allowed. This company was raised for two months. Also Capt Samuel Waterhouse's Comp Col Jacob Gerrish's Regt of guards, marched from home 30 Mar 1778, service 3 mos, 9 days at Winter Hill, including 100 miles travel from home. Company was detached from militia to serve from 2 Apr 1778 to 3 Jul 1778. Also list of men mustered by Nathaniel Wells, Muster Master of York Co, to serve for 8 mos in defense of eastern Massachusets (GWH, ME), agreeable to resolve of 25 Mar 1780, certified in York Co, 6 June 1780. Also, served in Capt Daniel Clark's Comp, Col Prime's (York Co) Regt, joined 9 May 1780, discharged 8 Dec 1780, service 7 mos, company raised for defense of eastern Massachusetts. Also receipt dated at Arundel 27 Aug 1781 for bounty pay to said HUFF by the town of Arundel to serve in the Continental Army for one year.

It is possible all these service records are for the same Thomas HUFF. More investigation is required to determine who the second Thomas was, if there were two persons.

The known Thomas HUFF md Mary BRIDGES (before 1765 - after 1820) and started their family in Arundel. They moved to Somerset Co by 1810 and were there in 1820. It is said they then moved to Burnham and helped found that town. They were not found in 1830. One undocumented source stated Thomas died 8 June 1844, but this is questionable. Their ch are not known but may include:

  1. Benjamin ( ) md Mary MILES and lived at Hartland along with Thomas. They likely had ch to incl Horatio, Franklin, and others. Horatio moved to Burnham.
  2. James (1783 ME - ) was near Thomas in 1820. He md Mary ??? (1780 ME - ) and they were still in Hartland in 1850. Ch not known.
  3. Moses (after 1775 ME ) was near Thomas in 1820 in Hartland. He was there in 1830 and 1840, but his family has not been defined.
  4. Daniel (after 1775 ME - ) was in Somerset Co in 1820, but not close to the others. He lived in Freeman in 1820 and North Salem in 1830. His family has not been defined.

Other ch not known.

Huff lineage is Thomas and Mary (Bridges) of Somerset Co and Burnham; Thomas II and Hepzibah (Banfield) of ME; Thomas I and Sarah (Ferris) of ME; Ferdinando and Mary (Moses) of MA and ME; prob. Atherton and Susanna (Kimball) of England and MA;
