Biography

"Rev Sir Thomas Collingwood Hughes, 8th Bt, was born on 12 August 1800 at Maken Parish, Devon, England. He was the son of Rev Sir Robert Hughes, 3rd Bt, and Bethia Hiscutt.

Thomas married[1]Elizabeth St John Butcher, daughter of Robert Butcher, at St. Mary's Church, Bungay, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom on 31 May 1820.

The March 1851 census[2]shows Thomas residing with his family at Laurel Lodge, Bungay.

The April 1861 census[3]shows Thomas residing with his family at The Vicarage House, South Tawton, Devon, England.

The April 1871 census[4]shows Thomas continuing to reside with his family at The Vicarage House, South Tawton.

His wife, Elizabeth Hughes passed away aged eighty one[5]during the third quarter of 1879 in the district of the Northampton Union, Northamptonshire, England.

The 3 April 1881 census[6]shows Thomas residing at The Rectory House, Little Billing, Northamptonshire.

After the passing of his first wife Thomas married[7]Mary Agnes Winwood Smith, daughter of Sir William Smith, 3rd Baronet and Susan Smith nee Parker, and who was forty eight years his younger, on 20 April 1881 in The Parish Church, Harrow, Middlesex, England. At the time of the ceremony Thomas, a widowerand Clergyman, resided in Little Billing and Mary Hughes nee Smith resided in Harrow. Both father Robert Hughes and father in law William Smith are nosted as Baronets.

Thomas succeeded[8]as the 8th Baronet Hughes, of East Bergholt, Suffolk [G.B., 1773] on 1 February 1889 after the passing of his nephew,Sir Frederick Hughes, 7th Baronet who was residing in Australia.

Thomas, 8th Baronet, late of The Rectory, Little Billing, passed away[9][10][11]after a week long illness, on 22 May 1889 aged eighty eight. His passing was registered[12][13]during the second quarter of 1889 in the district of Northampton, Northamptonshire. His probate[14]was administered at the proncipal Registry, London, England and proved nine weeks later on 13 July 1889 detailing effects of £223 12s 1d to his widow Dame Mary Hughes nee Smith.
