Biography

Birth: Aug. 17, 1863 Jeddo Luzerne County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Jan. 26, 1924 Hazleton Luzerne County Pennsylvania, USA

Hazleton Plain Speaker; Tuesday, October 18, 1898: Daniel Hugo, of West Hazleton, yesterday filed a petition for a habeas corpus hearing to recover his son, Henry Albert Hugo, aged 10 years, who is at present in custody of his wife. The petitioner alleges that the boy's mother is not a fit person to have charge of a child. The hearing has been set for October 22. Mr. and Mrs. Hugo were recently involved in divorce proceedings but the divorce was not granted by the court. - PA Death Certificate: died of fractured skull, 'probably accidental?'; 'accidental fall from porch'. - Hazleton Standard Sentinel; Monday AM, January 28, 1924; page 1: "Killed By Fall From Carson St. Porch" "Prominent Local Resident Overcome Saturday Night - Struck Cement Sidewalk" Daniel Hugo, of 216 East Holly street, this city, was killed Saturday evening when he plunged backwards from a rear porch of the hotel, owned and operated by Mrs. Ckrycwiski, at Carson and 6th streets. He received a fractured skull and probable internal injuries when he slipped and fell backwards. The deceased entered the hotel with two men at 10.10 p.m. They conversed for a few minutes before Hugo stated that he needed a breath of fresh air. When he failed to return after 15 minutes had passed, his companions became curious and started a search for him. They found him lying on the walk with blood oozing from his head. A call was sent to City Hall for First Lieutenant Kramer. Dr. Grala was called. He pronounced Hugo dead at 10.48 o'clock, after examination revealed that he had died a few minutes after falling to the cement walk. Dr. Burkhardt, deputy coroner, was notified of the accident. He had the body removed to Boyle's undertaking establishment for a post mortem examination. The body was identified by Officer Bertie Havrilla, of the city police force. It seems that the two companions with Hugo when he entered the hotel, did not know him by name. No one in the neighborhood knew Hugo's name or where he lived until Officer Havrilla, who lives nearby, was summoned.

Hugo has lived in this city the past 20 years. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Conrad, of this city; Casper, of Elizabeth, N. J.; Henry, of Clarks Summit; Mrs. Parkinson, of Beaver Meadow; Mrs. Daniel Creitz, of this city.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with private services at the house. Interment will be in Vine street cemetery.
