The Bondsman was Samuel Hull, Butcher of Christian Malford.[4]

Summary of the Will of Joseph Hull, 1823

In his will made on 06 Mar 1822 and proved on 01 Aug 1823 he was recorded as Joseph Hull senior of Christian Malford, Wiltshire, Yeoman.[7] He made bequests to:

  • his sons Joseph Hull, Samuel Hull, Thomas Hull and James Hull;
  • his daughters Ann, the wife of Robert Hull, and Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Hopkins;
  • his sister Elizabeth Belcher; and
  • William Vines of Christian Malford.

His wife Ann and his son James Hunt were nominated Executors.

When the will was proved it was noted that Ann, widow of Joseph, was then known as Ann Wheal.

[NB An Elizabeth Hull had married a William Belcher in 1781 at Christian Malford].

Research Notes

There were two possible baptisms for Joseph Hull at Christian Malford:

(1) Joseph Hull baptised on 20 Jan 1746/1747 at Christian Malford, Wiltshire, son of Joseph. NB The year of birth for this Joseph is uncertain as five siblings of Joseph were baptised on the same day.

(2) Joseph Hull baptised on 24 Sep 1749 at Christian Malford, Wiltshire, son of Samuel and Ann. A number of children were born to Samuel and Ann in the period 1741 to 1755, one of whom was Elizabeth Hull baptised on 07 Sep 1755.

The Will of Joseph Hull the elder, Butcher of Christian Malford, made on 12 Jan 1781 and proved on 03 Mar 1783[8] noted his wife Mary (surname probably Ponting) and various sons and daughters. They were Bishop, John, Thomas, Richard, Joseph, William, James, Mary, Ann (Hopkins), and Betty (Atwood). However, there was no mention of a daughter Elizabeth (who had married a William Belcher in 1781). An Elizabeth Hull had married a George Atwood at Christian Malford in 1780. Presumably this was the daughter Betty Atwood noted in the will of Joseph Hull the elder.

It is therefore presumed the Joseph Hull who married Hannah Wise was the Joseph Hull baptised on 24 Sep 1749 at Christian Malford, Wiltshire, son of Samuel and Ann.
