Biography
Rosina Hunter was the daughter of Samuel Hunter and Mary Ann Tranter of Warwickshire.
Her father worked as a Jeweller/Silversmith. She was baptised on January 4 1832, Birmingham, St Phillip.
Rosina married John Powell Payton in Staffordshire. The couple emigrated to Australia in 1848 arriving at Moreton Bay, Brisbane in December. Rosina was 19 and John 22.
They had 2 children born in Queensland, Thomas Samuel and John Bonelba.
A daughter Sarah is also recorded as daughter of John and Rosina born about 1848 and died 1857 in Victoria. Rosina and John had made their way to Sandhurst, Victoria where their second daughter Mary Ann was born in 1855 but didn't survive.
The Paytons left Australia on the ship Charlotte Jane and arrived in Otago, New Zealand before February 1859 settling in Dunedin. Five more children were born but not all survived, Alfred who died age 3 in 1867, George, Lucy and 2 births, names unrecorded. The unrecorded births were stillborn.
Rosina died in 1879 at their home in Hanover street, age 50. She is buried at Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
Four of Rosina's children survived her, 3 sons and a daughter as noted on her Death Certificate.
FUNERAL NOTICE The friends of J. P. Payton are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late wife, which will leave his son's residence, St Andrew Street, for the place of interment in the Northern Cemetery on Wednesday the 22nd inst. at 2 o'clock.
