Biography

John's was born in the colony of New South Wales and his parents were English.

When Samuel Marsden bought the Active at Port Jackson in 1813 he employed a new crew with Captain Thomas Hansen appointed as the master. Initially John was employed as the carpenter then around 1817 he became the Mate. He served on her for at least eight years.

He was on the Active when it brought Samuel Marsden, several missionary families, and returning Māori Chiefs to New Zealand.
