Biography

Phineas Huntley lived in Appalachia, in New York.

Phineas Huntley was born in Lyme, New London County, Connecticut Colony on 14 Jan 1754. He was the son of James Huntley and Lucretia Smith.[1]

Phineas married Ruhamah Tiffany, probably in Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, in about 1779. Their children were also probably born in Lyme:[2]

  1. Elisha Huntley (b. ca. 1780; d. 11 Jun 1803, Exeter, Otsego County, New York)
  2. Calvin Huntley (b. ca. 1783; d. 3 Apr 1834, Exeter, Otsego County, New York)
  3. Ruhama Huntley (b. 26 May 1789; m. 21 Feb 1809, William Emmons Peck; d. 22 Jul 1866, Spring Prairie, Wisconsin?)
  4. Lucretia Huntley (b. ca. 1795; m. 9 Feb 1817, William Mattison; d. 26 Apr 1856)
  5. Betsey Huntley (b. ?; m. Simeon Marsh; d. Sergeant Bluff, Iowa?)

Phineas, Ruhama and their children moved from Lyme to Exeter Township in Otsego County, New York in the late spring of 1803, arriving there by early June, since their eldest son, Elisha, died there on 11 Jun 1803.[3]

Phineas Huntley died, probably in Exeter Township, Otsego County, New York, on 30 Aug 1820. He was buried in the Huntley Corners Cemetery in West Winfield, Herkimer County, New York.[4]

Probate

In his Last Will and Testament, dated 17 Mar 1820 and admited for probate in Otsego County, New York on 17 Oct 1820, Phineas mentioned his wife Ruhamah, his son Calvin, three daughters (Betsey Marsh, Ruhamah Peck, and Lucretia Matheson), and five grandsons (Elisha Marsh, Jacob Marsh, Ira Marsh, Calvin Peck, and Abner Matheson). He named four executors: his wife Ruhamah, his son Calvin Huntley, his brother James Huntley, and William Park (possibly his son-in-law William Peck). His witnesses were Lydia Huntley, Isaac Huntley, and Deborah Tiffany.[5]
