Biography

Phyllis May Hurst was born on 8 October 1913 in London, England to Philip Jesse Hurst and Emily (Davidson) Hurst, the second of their four children. Her birth was registered in Camberwell in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Davidson.^[1]

Phyllis came to Canada with her parents and three siblings in 1920. They travelled aboard the ship Minnedosa, which arrived in Quebec in November. Their final destination was Nanaimo, BC - to join her grandmother who lived at Howard Ave.^[2]

In 1921 May Phylias Hurst (age 7) lived in the Five Acres area of Nanaimo [which includes Howard Ave] with her father Philip (34, Labourer in Machine Shop), mother Emily (33), and three siblings: E Arthur (12), Albert (5), and Eileen (11 months), as well as her uncle Thomas Davidson (38, Stoker in Blacksmith Shop).^[3]

In 1931 Phylis May Hurst (age 17) lived at 407 Howard Ave in Nanaimo with her father Philip H (45, Foreman Road Const), mother Emily Mary (44, Homemaker), brother Albert S (15, Student), and sister Elieen Nora (10, Student).^[4]

Phyllis May Hurst married John James Gannon (aka "Jack") on 20 May 1936 at Bishop's Palace in Victoria, BC. She was a sales girl and he was a mechanic, and they both resided in Nanaimo.^[5]

Phyllis and Jack had three children:

1. Rosalie
2. Ron (1945-2020)
3. Shealagh

Phyllis passed away on 1 June 2011 in Nanaimo.^[6][7]
