Biography

Alfred McChord Hurt was born in Boyle County, Kentucky, in the spring of 1910, a son of William Fairleigh Hurt and Laura (McChord) Hurt. A graduate of Danville's Presbyterian-founded Centre College, he became involved in oversight of government relief programs during the years of the Dust Bowl.^[1]

Hurt was subsequently a highly-placed officer of USAID and its forerunner entities at a variety of locations from China to India to Vietnam, and other postings, from the 1940s to the 1970s, and he served as Deputy Governor of the United States Trust Territories in the Pacific. He was married twice, first to divorcée Claire Isabel (McGill) O'Sullivan (by 1949); following a divorce in 1956,^[2] he married second, Virginia Baird, in 1960. That union, too, ended in divorce, in 1989.

Alfred M. Hurt died in the summer of 1996; he is buried at Lebanon, Kentucky.
