Biography

Etta (Hurt) Mitchell was born in Appalachia, in Virginia.

Etta Hurt was born in August 1899 in Virginia, likely at Buchanan County where her parents resided. In the 1900 census Etta or Elly (age 1) was the single daughter of William P Hurt at Garden District, Buchanan, Virginia, United States.^[1] In the 1910 census Etta (age 10) was the single daughter of William J Hurt at Garden District, Buchanan, Virginia, United States.^[2] In the 1920 census Etta (age 20) was the single daughter of Johnson W Hurt in Buchanan, Virginia, United States.^[3]

Etta married between the 1920 census and the 1930 census. Her spouse was an Abbott. Details of their marriage are unknown. Her spouse either died or they were divorced prior to her subsequent marriage. Etta (age 30) married Zachariah 'Zack' T Mitchell (age 47) on 29 January 1930 at Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[4] Zack had been previously married to Hannah Jane Sparks. She passed away (age 43) on 21 Mar 1927.

In the 1930 census Etta (age 30) was the wife of Zacharire Mitchell (age 48) at Tazewell, Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[5] Also seen in this census are five children from Zack's previous marriage. In the 1940 census Etta or Edie (age 40) was the wife of Zack Mitchell at Frankford Magisterial District, Greenbrier, West Virginia, United States.^[6] Also shown in this census are two adult sons from Zack's prior marriage. The family's residence in 1935 was listed as rural Buchanan county, Virginia, USA.

It is believed that Etta passed away sometime between 1940 and 1966 as Zack's death record indicated that two spouses were previously deceased. Details of her death and burial are unknown.

Zachariah died from bronchopneumonia at age 84 on 19 January 1966 at Richlands, Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^{[7] [8]} He was buried with first wife Hannah at Hurt Cemetery, Council, Buchanan County, Virginia, United States.^[9]
