Biography

Michael was born 20 March 1897 at 57 Brick Lane, Spitalfields, London. He was the son of Chewel Hurwitz and Bertha Herwitz formerly Lerer [sic].^[1] Michael's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1897 in the Whitechapel district.^{[2] [3]}

In the 1901 census Michael (age 4) was the son of Chewel Hurwitz at 35, Manor Road, East Ham, West Ham, London & Essex, England.^[4]

In the 1911 census Michael (age 14), School, was the son of Chewell Hurwitz at 104 Tredegar Road Bow E, Poplar Borough, London & Middlesex, England.^[5]

In the 1921 census Michael (age 24), Compositor (Printing), was the single son of Chewell Harwitz at 62 Merchant Street, 62, Merchant Street, Poplar Borough, London & Middlesex, England.^[6]

Michael married Doreen (Dora) Gardner on 10 February 1935 at Hambro Synagogue, Adler Street, Stepney, London.^[7] Michael's marriage to Doreen Gardner was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1935 in the Stepney district.^[8] Michael's marriage to Gardner was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1935 in the Stepney district.^[9]

Michael's death (age 64) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1961 in the Hampstead district.^[11] Michael died on 2 June 1961 of 113 Bridge Lane, London NW11 London, England, died at New End Hospital, Hampstead, London and his estate passed probate on 12 March 1962 in London to Emanuel Hurwitz.^[12]In his will Michael appoints Emmanuel Hurwitz, his nephew, as executor. He leaves bequests to his sister Mary Hurwitz, his nephew's son Michael Hurwitz, his niece Lily Aaronson and her son David Aaronson and mentions his wife Doreen Houghton.^[13][14]

Michael Houghton wrote under the pseudonym of Michael Juste. His book Escape, and other verse was published by the Swan Press Leeds, in 1924. He was the founder of 'Atlantis Book Shop' at 49 Museum Street, London, which specialised in occult literature.^[15]
