James was born in about 1799 in England.
He married Lydia Adams on 31 August at Saint Andrews, Holborn, Middlesex.[1]
James traveled to Western Australia with his wife and five children on the Gilmore, arriving on 15 December 1829.[2]

He was granted 480 acres in the Avon district in 1831.[2]
James was a sawyer and cabinet maker in Perth in 1843 and a carpenter an house proprietor at Williams Street by the 1860s and a landowner by the 1870s, qualifying him as a juror with £150 of real estate.[2]
He also taught Sunday school and attended the first Methodist Class meeting in Western Australia.[2]
James passed away on 11 August 1871 and was buried two days later in the East Perth Cemetery.[3][4]
