Biography

Born 10 Dec 1836. St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Source: #S14 IRELAND THOMAS JAMES IRELAND/JANET DUFF 10 DECEMBER 1836 8 JANUARY 1837 ST ANDREWS - HOPE PARK ASSOCIATE

LDS IGI. Thomas Ireland Birth: 1838 Ceres, Fife, Scotland. Parents: James IRELAND and Janet DUFF. (very likely as 4th child was named Janet Duff IRELAND; also a 2nd IGI record lists father as James Playfair IRELAND, and 1st son was named James Playfair IRELAND).

(see father James for 1841 Census).

1861 Census (likely). Transcribed as "Matte's Cans" St Andrews, Fife. Thos Ireland 22 St Andrews Fife labourer. Agnes Ireland 22 Dundee Forfar.

"MUTTOS LANE" is a narrow alley leading from Market Street and North Street between what was the Cross Keys Hotel (now student flats) and the present Cross Keys Bar.

Thomas from 1871-1889

  • Thomas 1836 was divorced by Agnes 1839 22 May 1877 for abuse, after quite a lot of Newspaper interest.
  • Thomas 1836 remained in Scotland until late 1879.
  • He had custody of Elizabeth and Alexander but Alexander drowned in 1871 so Thomas 1836 and Elizabeth immigrated to New Zealand in 1880 under the Vogel Scheme.
  • He died in 1889 of Heart Disease and is buried Orowaiti Old Cemetery, Buller, New Zealand.

It appears Agnes may have been living with Thomas' uncle, another Thomas, in 1874 (but where was husband Thomas?). Newspaper reports she had 2 daughters with her, aged 6 and 4, which would match Janet (1868) and Agnes (c1871). It notes that Thomas Ireland (uncle) was a 62 year old widower, and a native of Scotland.

Rookwood Cemetery CD lists him with his wife Elizabeth Lamb: Thomas; 22 Aug 1874; age 62; - Husb of above. Native of St. Andrews, Scotland. Elizabeth; 09 Aug 1870; age 66; - Wife of Thomas Ireland. b. 12 Aug 1804. Native of St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland. Census records shows the Ireland family lived in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland from 1841 - 1881.
