Geographical Note and Social context: In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Horncastle like this:
Horncastle.-- market town and par., with ry. sta., mid. Lincolnshire, on river Bain, at foot of the Wolds, 1818 ac. Market-day, Saturday. Horncastle has an important trade in corn and wool, also in malting and brewing. In addition to its weekly market 3 fairs are held, the horse fair being one of the largest in the United Kingdom.
A market charter was granted in 1230 by Henry III and the town flourished until the 16th century. In the 1580s/1590s, Plague strikes Lincolnshire and checks population growth in towns like Horncastle. In the 19th century the town flourished again due to the opening of the Horncastle Navigation Canal in 1802. the River Bain was deepened and straightened to allow 50-ton ships to navigate all the way to wharves at Horncastle. Two basins with wharves were built on the river Bain and the River Waring. Canal barges transported wool, grain and coal to Leeds and Wakefield . As a result of all this commercial activity, Horncastle grew by leaps and bounds. New businesses grew up around the market place The canal was officially declared defunct in 1889.
The town was famous for its horse fair from before the 13th century, it was normally held on the 21st of August, but it lasted a week.
Horncastle gained a Crown market charter in the 13th century. It was long known for its great August horse fair, a famous trading event that continued until the mid-20th century. It ended after the Second World War, when horses had largely ceased to be used on farms. [1][2]
