Biography

James was born in 1823.

James married Susan Maria Adams on 12 January 1847 at Washington County, Kentucky.[1] In 1850, James, Susan and their daughter, Amelia, were residing in Fairfax county, Virginia, where James was a farmer.[2] By 1860, James was a hotel keeper in Fairfax, Virginia.[3]

On 24 May 1861, James was the proprietor of the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia.[4] The previous morning, Union Troops entered the city of Alexandria and the Confederate Virginia forces left the city.[4]

Colonel Ellsworth "soon after the arrival of the federal troops in this city, entered the Marshall House and took down the flag of the Confederate States; when coming down the stairs with the flag, he was shot and killed by Mr. Jackson."[4] James Jackson was instantly killed by the soldiers.[4]

Justice James A English held and inquest "upon the body of James Jackson, proprietor of the Marshall house, and having heard the evidence in the case, the jury found that 'Jackson came to his death at the hands of the troops of the United States, whilst in defence of his private property, in his own Home.'"[4]
