Joseph was born in 1848 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom. He was the son of Charles Jacobs and Sarah Augusta (Davies) Jacobs.^[1][2]

When Joseph was about 26 he married Esther Migel on 14 July 1874 in Lima, Peru. The couple had 7 children: Serena Jacobs, Vivian Ramus Jacobs, Augusta Alice Jacobs, Charles Robert Ramus Jacobs, Josephine Charlotte Jacobs, Alfred de Amnon Ramus Jacobs and Henry Houston Jacobs.^[6]
