Biography

William was born January 8, 1836 in England. He was baptized February, 1836. His father is listed as a banker’s clerk on the baptismal certificate.

William is listed as a merchant’s apprentice on 1851 England Census. He was one of 9 children, including younger twin brothers.

William emigrated to Canada in 1859 and married Mary Clarissa Adelaide Shibley, from Belleville, Ontario who was a descendant of United Empire Loyalists.

William is listed as a commercial merchant on the 1871 Census of Canada. He resided in St. David’s Ward, Toronto East, Ontario.

He resided in St. Thomas, Ontario with his wife and son Charles H. Jagger according to the 1881 Census of Canada.

On the 1891 Census of Canada his wife and son Charles H., a bookkeeper, live with him in St. Albans Ward, Ontario.

William and his wife lived with their adult son Charles H. Jagger and his wife Annie and their 2 daughters Nellie and Dorris in Buffalo, New York in 1900, according to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census.

By 1901, the 3 generations of the Jagger family had moved back to Canada. William and his wife continued to live with son Charles H. and his wife Annie in Hamilton, Ontario. There were 2 granddaughters, Nellie and Doris and a new grandson, Philip.

According to 1911 Census of Canada, the family had moved again to St. Catherine’s, Ontario. It lists William and wife, Charles and wife, and the 3 grandchildren: Nellie Edwige, Doris and Philip Shirley.

The entire family moved to Toronto by 1921 and are all listed on the 1921 Census of Canada.

William passed away in 1923. Cause of death is listed as senility. He is buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario. There is a photograph of his headstone, which he shares with his wife.
