Biography

Oates Jagger was born in Shelf, Yorkshire, England.

Oates was born in Shelf, Yorkshire, England, on October 28, 1878.^[1] He was the son of Linneaus Jagger and Jane Bartle. He was baptized on March 30, 1879, in Coley at St John.^[2] The Parish Register listed his parents as Linneaus and Jan Ellen residing in Shelf. His father's occupation "Warp Dresser".^[3] He was enumerated in the 1881 census ^[4] as a two year old residing with his parents and two siblings on Shelf Hall Lane, Shelf. The family was still residing on Shelf Hall Lane in 1891.^[5] Oates was one of five children. He stated he was twelve and a "Worsted Spinner". He was residing with his parents and four siblings at Belle Vue, Shelf, in 1901.^[6] He was twenty two, single, and a "Mechanic Fitter".

Oates married Emma Greenwood in 1905.^[7] The Banns had been read on July 2nd, 9th, and 16th at St John, Clayton.^[8] The ceremony was performed on August 2, 1905, at St John. The Parish register listed Oates as a twenty six year old bachelor and "Mechanic" residing at Stone Chair, Shelf. His father was named as Linneaus Jagger "Warp Dresser". Emma was a twenty eight year old spinster and "Weaver" residing at 87 Old Dolphin, Clayton Heights. Her father was named as William Henry Greenwood "Stone Mason. The witnesses were Ralph Jagger, Ada Parker, and Ida Harris.^[9] It appears the couple had one child, Evelyn, in 1906. Oates, Emma, and Evelyn appeared in the 1939 Register ^[10] residing at 29 Watmough Street, Bradford. His occupation "Wool Textile Engineer".

Emma passed away in 1947. Oates married Clara Thornton in 1948.^[11] The marriage was registered in the third quarter in Bradford.

Oates passed away on March 25, 1958, at The Royal Infirmary, Halifax. ^[12] His address at time of death was 13 Cross Lane, Shelf (Halifax). His Probate was administered in Wakefield on May 30, 1958, naming Frank Jagger, retired fitter. ^[13] Oates was seventy nine.
