Jameson is a common Scots name. It nominally means son of James, but many families simply took this name in honor of King James. There is no correct spelling -- it is seen as Jameson, Jamison and Jamieson within the same families.
He was Presbyterian. James moved Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland and migrated to Galway, Ireland, probably about 1670. He came to America in 1700 with two sons. They probably landed first in New York, before moving to near York Pennsylvania.
