He served in World War II as a translator and could speak fluent Russian.
He was blacklisted in films in the 1950s due to the "red scare".
He appeared in dozens of radio series, including some of the most popular and longest running, such as the critically acclaimed dramatic series Suspense, The Mysterious Traveler and X Minus One.
A 1936 newspaper article mixed up his wife, Jessica Pepper, with actress Barbara Pepper.
