Biography

Henry Jefferson was born in 1782 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. He was the son of Ralph Jefferson and Mary Hindson. Henry was christened on October 27, 1782 at their local parish All Saints in Newcastle Upon Tyne.[1]

Henry married Jane Waker on May 13, 1803 at the Church of St Andrew, Lamesley, Durham.[2] Together they may have had 10 children (sources are not available for some of these children):

  5. Mary Jefferson

Jane died in 1819 along with their twin sons, born two weeks before her death.

Henry married Margaret Walker (possibly Jane's younger sister) on 19 January 1822 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England.[3] Together they had 5 more children.

In the 1841 England census, Henry was 60 years old and a blacksmith. He was living with his wife and 6 children at their home in Chester Le Street, Durham, England.[4]

In the 1851 census Henry was 68 years old and living with his wife and 3 adult children at their home in Lamesley, Durham, England.[5]

In the 1861 census Henry was 78 years old and a retired blacksmith. He was living with his wife, two children and two grandchildren at their family home in Lamesley, Durham, England.[6]

Henry Jefferson died the following year on January 28, 1862 at Chowdean, Durham, England, United Kingdom at the age of 79 years. He was laid to rest at St Andrews Churchyard in Lamesley, Durham.[7]

The Will of Henry Jefferson of Durham Blacksmith deceased who died 28 January 1862 at Chowdean aforesaid was proved at Durham by the oath of James Jefferson of Chowdean aforesaid Blacksmith the Son the sole Executor. Henry died on 28 January 1862 in Durham, England and their estate passed probate on 19 February 1862 in Durham.[8]
