Mary Jane Jeffrey was born in 1875 at Paxford, Gloucestershire, England. She was the daughter of Charles Jeffrey and Harriet Sutton.^[1] Note: Some records for her family spell their surname Jeffries or Jeffs or other variations.

In the 1881 Census, she was living at Blockley, Warwickshire with her parents and siblings.^[2]

In the 1891 Census, she was living at Blockley, Warwickshire as a Domestic servant in the household of James Hatter.^[3]
