George N. Jerauld was born 23 Dec 1811 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, the son of Edward Gorton Jerauld and Sophia Baker. He was a young boy of six when his father moved the family to Princeton, in Gibson County, south-western Indiana, following an uncle who had settled there. Then, during the four years between 1824 and 1828, after his mother had died and his father had relocated the family to New Harmony, Posey County, he learned the tailor trade and worked as a tailor. In view of declining health, he was advised to return to Princeton, where he began working in the grocery of his uncle and eventually built up his own dry goods business.[1]
On 18 Mar 1835, he married Sarah Stallings, who died only five years later.[2] Then, in 1842, he married Nancy Foster, with whom he had seven children, among whom were:
George was noted in the region for having run his business continuously in the same location for over sixty years.
Politically Mr. Jerauld was originally an old line Whig. In 1860 he voted for Abraham Lincoln, and from that time to the present has been a consistent and zealous Republican. Mrs. Jerauld is a member of the Presbyterian Church.[1]
George died just four months after his wife, on 15 Feb 1894, at age 82, and is buried with her at Warnock Cemetery, Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana.
