John Henry was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1818, the son of Cummings Jewett and Mary Burgen[1]
He married Mary E. Houston, also of Charlestown, in 1845, at the Universalist Church in Charlestown.[2] The couple resided in Charlestown, where John worked as a tailor.[3] They had two children:
By 1860, the family lived in Somerville, Massachusetts, where John worked at a clothing store.[4] His mother resided with the family.
John was 43 years old when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered in as a private in Company B of the 5th Mass. Infantry, on September 19, 1862. He served a 9-month term, during which he traveled with his men to North Carolina. He was discharged at the end of his term, on July 2, 1863.[5] His war service left him with chronic dysentery.[6]
At the time of the 1880 census, John is listed as divorced. He lived in Boston, with his son and daughter-in-law. He continued to work as a merchant tailor.[7]
He died in 1890, at his home in Allston Square, Boston, at the age of 72 years.[8] He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brighton, Massachusetts, with his son Henry and his family.[9]
