Biography

Harold was born probably April 7, 1911 in Lakefield, Lunenburg County. He was the son of Joseph Jodrey and Alma Wile. He had been living in New Ross, Lunenburg County from 1927 to 1937.[1] He married Elmona Hartt on April 26, 1937.[2] At the time of marriage he states he was living at Waterville, Hants County and his occupation was a lumberman. Following marriage they lived at Lower Vaughan, Hants County.[1] On July 7, 1941 he enlisted in the army.[1] He served with the West Nova Scotia Highlanders. He arrived in England on March 1, 1942 and then arrived in Italy on June 16, 1943. On August 31, 1944 he was seriously wounded by an anti-personnel mine and died the next day. He is buried in the Ancona War Cemetery, Ancona, Italy.[3] His miliary awards are the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, CVSM & Clasp,[1]

Research Notes

There was some confusion over his birth date. His military Attestation document states April 7, 1910 while the Estates Branch document completed after his death by his widow states April 7, 1913 ... neither of which years match the June 1, 1911 census which states April 1911 which has to be correct as he was a two-month old infant.

His marriage states birth location as Bridgewater however I suspect that is a general area and not a specific community as the family at that time lived in Lakefield, which exists today only as Lakefield Road in Lake Centre, not far from Bridgewater and he was probably born there at home.

There was some confusion in the spelling of his name, likely from errors in his military service file resulting in some documents spelling it Jodery. Harold obviously could not read or write having signed his name with an "X" on his marriage record and his enlistment Attestation document. Unfortunately his grave stone has the incorrect spelling.
