Biography

Laurits Johannesson Galte was born about 1500, and was the brother of Torgils Johannesson Galte.

He was recorded at Seim in Kvinnherad in 1540.

He was supposedly first married to a daughter of Trond Rustung and Karen Kold, and later to a daughter of Fartegn Matsson and Karen Kold who was a widow at Valen. He settled at Valen after their marriage.

His children were:

• Johannes, mentioned at Valen in 1563 and 1578, died 1620
• Magdalena, married Gotskalk Samsonson and lived at Sundal in Mauranger, later married Endre
• Birgitte, married Olav Bagge, lived at Valen
• Karen, married Jakob Knutson Jørstad from Årdal in Ryfylke

Laurits is not mentioned in the tax lists in 1563 and probably died a while earlier; A Knut is instead mentioned at Valen, paying high taxes; he might have been married to Laurits' widow. Before Knut in the tax lists is "Oluff in Vadelø", who has to be Olav Bagge.
