Biography

Jenny Butt from Moruya has emailed me saying that . . . . . Mary Guy (nee Johnson) is now buried with her parents at Rookwood. Mary was originally buried in Devonshire Street Cemetery and was re-interred in Rookwood Necropolis 31st May 1901. Mary was moved from Devonshire St. when Central Station was being built in 1900. Born 1832 married Robert Guy 11/6/1851 died 27/2/1880.

Research into Mary's grave reveals that it contains her parents, Thomas and Mary Ann, Mary's brother, Thomas, Jane STEEL, wife of Alexander Steel, Susannah Agnes ROBINSON, wife of John Robinson and Elizabeth Dickson. The application for Mary's internment was made by Robert Guy (JP). The plot is described as 10 x 8 and was suitable for 4 adults. The sole trustee for the plot was the late Thomas Johnson, her father. Jane STEEL, Alexander STEEL, Susannah Agnes ROBINSON, John ROBINSON and Elizabeth DICKSON appear to be our relations as the re-internment application was made by the same person, James Johnson.

I assume that Mary Ann, her brother Thomas Sydney, her mother, Mary Ann and her father, William were originally buried in Devonshire Street Cemetery and all were re-interred at Rookwood. On 6/3/2017 I went to the State Library and checked the re-internment records for Devoinshire Street Cemetery. I confirmed that Mary was buried in the Congregational Section of Devonshire Street Cemetery and re-intered in Rookwood. The application for Re-internment was made by James Johnson, Waltham Building, Bond Street, Sydney.

Australian Town & Country Journal, dated Saturday, 6 March 1880 has a death notice for Mary. It reads, Guy, February 27th, at her residence, No.1 Bishop-thorpe terrace, Glebe Point Road, Mary, aged 48 years, the beloved wife of Robert Guy, Esq. JP and second daughter of the late Thomas Johnson.
