Mary was born on 14 February 1847 in Australind, Western Australia.^[1][2] She is the daughter of Harley Johnston and Mary Clifton.

Mary died early the following year at eleven months of age.^[4]

DIED. At Australind, on the 11th ultimo, to the great grief of her parents and relatives, Mary Elinor Nannette, infant daughter of H. R.John-ston, Esq., and grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton.^[5]
