- Esther was born in Mount Crawford to John Johnson and Elizabeth Catherine (nee Hardie). She was the oldest child of 9.
- When she was 17 she married Neil Rankin. Together they had 5 children. Their 5th child (John Duncan Rankin) was born in Jun 1977 and only 4 months later her husband died in Hospital at the age of 34. John sadly passed away in April the following year, leaving Esther with 4 children under the age of 7.
- Not long after John's death, she married James Park Woods (Sep 1878) at the residence of her Mother at Redhill SA. Together they had 9 children.
- Tragically she died in 1893 from childbirth of their son Newton Joshua Woods (who only survived 2 months).
- She was laid to rest at the Two Wells Cemetery.
