Biography

Gertrude was born in 1887. She was the daughter of Frederick Fraser Johnstone and Gertrude Hardee.^[1][2]

On 25 October 1912, Gertrude's engagement to Marquis Alexis Carlo Doughi (sic) was announced in the Montgomery Times newspaper, in Montgomery, Alabama where the Johnstone family lived for a number of years. ^[3] Alexis was the son of Marquis Francesco Donghi and Beatrice Baldwin Donghi.^[4] Gertrude married Alexis Carlo Donghi on 14 February 1913 at Manhattan, New York City.^[5]

Gertrude and Alexis apparently returned to Italy and on 7 June 1914. she gave birth to a son, Francesco, in Genoa.^[6][7] Alexis died sometime prior to 1919 when Gertrude, listed as a widow, returned from Italy aboard the SS Duca Degli Abruzzi, with their son Francesco, age 5 1/2, departing for New Yok on 13 December 1919.^[6][8] Gertrude listed her residence in Italy as that of her mother-in-law, Bice Donghi, Villa Chiesa Multedo, Pegli,^[6]

Gertrude Donghi, nee Johnstone, married Charles Green on 16 January 1920 at Manhattan, New York City.^[2] Gertrude, Charles, her son Francesco Donghi, and Charles's son, Charles, departed for England shortly after the wedding and lived for several years in Langley, Berks, England.^[7]

Gertrude died in 1973.^[9]
