Charles Joiner was born about 1820 in New York, United States. He married Harriet, probably about 1846. Their children were born in Norwich, Upper Canada (present day Ontario).
In 1848, Charles was on the tax assessment rolls for Norwich township. He was included near an Aaron Joiner and Thomas Joiner, who were also residing in the township. [1]
In the 1851 census Charles (age 31) lived in Norwich, Oxford (county), Canada West (Ontario).[2] He lived with his wife Harriet (23) and children Phebe (4) and Sharlet [sic] (3).
In the 1861 census Charles (age 41) lived in South Norwich, Oxford, Canada West (Ontario).[3] He lived with his wife Harriet (33) and children Phoebe Ann (13), Charlotte (11), Thomas (9), Esther Rose (5), and Mary F (2).
In the 1871 census Charles (age 50) was a married labourer in Norwick South, Oxford South, Ontario.[4] He lived with his wife Harriete and children Pheby, Charlott, Thomas, Hester, Mary, Charles, George, Earnest, and Isabella, and granddaughter Minnie Melissa Joiner.
In the 1881 census Charles (age 63) lived in Norwich South, Oxford South, Ontario.[5] He lived with his wife Harriet (59) and children Charles (18) and Isabell (16).
Probate was conducted on Charles Joiner's estate on 24 Sep. 1885; he died intestate. He died on or about 7 Oct. 1883 in the city of St. Thomas, Elgin, Ontario. He was a widower. [6][7]
There was a different Charles Joiner in Loughborough Township, Frontenac County, Ontario in about 1840, and he was still around the area in the 1851 and 1860 Censuses. (Loughborough Twp is just north of Kingston, Ont. Today it is about 6 hours drive from Oxford Township, so back then it would have been several days' travel.) So not the same guy, but maybe shared parents or grandparents...? Many of the early settlers in Loughborough were Loyalists who left NY between 1792 and 1820.
I did not create a profile for him as my to-do list is already overflowing and he is not a relative of mine. Now the small world part: he purchased land from a loyalist ancestor of mine (Abraham Boyce) and was a witness in a dispute over title to an adjacent parcel of land. Lots of starting points in the Research Notes to my GGGG Grandfather. An 1851 property transaction in Norwich Township[8] refers to a Charles Joiner Sr., (almost certainly Charles Joiner (abt.1796-abt.1858)) and a Charles Joiner Jr., eldest son and heir of the late Thomas Joiner. This Charles Joiner Jr. is almost certainly the subject of this profile.
Charles Joiner and Samuel Joiner took an inventory of the estate of Thomas Joiner, deceased, at the request of his widow, Catharine. It was dated 23 Aug. 1849. [9]The Samuel Joiner named may be Samuel Joiner who is approximately the same age and lived in the same township.
