Biography

Joseph was born about 1827, probably near Monterey, Highland, Virginia.

He married Elizabeth Ann Smith (1834-1901) on 13 July, 1852 in Upshur, Virginia (later West Virginia), Rev. John McCoy officiating.^[1] They had the following children, according to FamilySearch:

He passed away in 1898. He is buried in Beechtown Cemetery.

According to 1880 census, father born in NY, mother in VA.

Originally this profile was created with dates b. 20 May 1834, d. 2 May 1898. Those dates do not reconcile with Find a Grave, found after creation of profile: Find a Grave has birth in 1827 and death in 2 May 1899. Changed to match Find a Grave, then changed death date back to 1898 after closely looking at the stone and finding the death record. Birth date might be 1825. Perhaps more sources for his parents may be found. Originally FS said marriage was in Taylor, VA, but it seems the record is in Upshur.
