Mary Ellen Jones was born in about 1857 in Liverpool, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Thomas William Jones, a commercial traveller.

Mary married George Robinson on 24 Jun 1882 at St Catherine's Church in Tranmere, Cheshire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and neither had been married before. George was a joiner living in Tranmere; Mary lived in Birkenhead. Their fathers were named as George Robinson (joiner) and Thomas William Jones (commercial traveller, deceased). The witnesses were Benjamin Robinson and Emma Jones.
