Mary Jones, daughter of Owen Jones, a distinguished Boston citizen, married John Dominis on October 9, 1821. John Dominis (1796-1846) was a sea captain who came to America from Trieste (probably originally from Croatia) in 1819. He made several historic voyages through the Pacific Northwest of America and across the Pacific. Mary and John had 2 daughters and 1 son. After living in New York for about 6 years, John Dominis moved his wife and son to Honolulu in 1837. He continued to sail commercially and was lost at sea in 1846 on a trip to China. Widowed, Mary rented rooms in their mansion to support herself. Their house was named Washington Place. John Owen Dominis, son of Mary and John, married the princess who became Hawai'i's last monarch, Queen Lili`uokalani, making him consort. He played a large role in business and government in Hawai'i. Washington Place was the family home until the Queen's death. It was later used as the governor's residence and is now a National Historic Landmark.
