Biography

Benjamin was baptized in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 12 May 1650. He was the son of Thomas Joy Sr and Joan Gallop. ^[1]

Many Joy family researchers have used The Joy Genealogy as their source, which has major mistakes.^[2] For instance, the author didn't transcribe the birth or baptism dates correctly for the children of Thomas and Joan Joy. The original record for Benjamin's baptism says it was on the 12th of the third month. The third month on the calendar used at the time (Julian, rather than today's Gregorian) was May. The author says he was born 12 March 1650 in "Hingham, Mass," which was her incorrect interpretation of the Boston baptism, and says he was baptized 12 June 1650, compounding her mistake. There is no record of Benjamin in Hingham.

This profile previously claimed Benjamin died as an infant, which isn't supported by any found or published source. Helen Lee suggests he may have been the Benjamin Joy who was of Ellsworth, ME, in 1736.
