Biography

John Thomas Judges[1][2][3] was born before 14 Jan 1849 in Boughton-under-Blean, Kent[4][5] to John Judges and Mary[6] Fox as he was christened on that date.[1] John, the son of a bricklayer grew up with his siblings; William, Caroline, Rachel, and baby James (who sadly died before his first birthday), in the village of Faversham, where the family had the help of a nurse named Mary (Unknown) Weatherly.[6]

He became a certified teacher[4][7] and married Caroline[7][5] Eleanor[8] Swoffer in 1874 at Faversham,[9] and had at least, the following children:

Kate Swoffer Judges[7][4] born in about 1876. [10]
Caroline Mary Swoffer Judges[7][4] born 22 Jul 1879.[8]

While the children were young the family lived at the school yard at Loughborough, and had a 16 year old servant, Hannah Hall.[4] As the girls grew up the family lived at house number 43, Church Gate Schools,[7] where they lived next door to Catharine Bailey, a mistress at the Elementry School.[11] By 1901 he was a school master.[5]

John Thomas Judges died in 1909 on Dec 28th,[12] his death was registered at Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, in the last quarter of that year.[2] He was 61 years old.[2][3] John was buried at All Saints, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England on 31 Dec 1909.[3] His probated is dated 12 Jan 1910 at Leicester, and the beneficiaries were Kate Swoffer Judges and Caroline Mary Swoffer Judges.[12]

The Churchgate school was demolished in 1931 to make way for the widening of Leymington Street.[13]
