Gerhard was born 1859 in Wustweiler, the son of royal forester Gerhard Junk and Louise Roeder. His 1882 emigration record from the Saar says that he was a miner, and that he left Germany with 500 Marks, a huge amount of money for a 23 year old. Somehow he learned the trade of a gilder, a person who covers things to look like gold, between the time he left the Saar in December 1882 and arrived in New York in March 1883.
Gerhard married Frieda Seeger early 1889 in Manhattan and they had 7 children together between 1891 and 1912:
Louise, born 1891 in Brooklyn
Theodore, born 1893 in Manhattan
Bertha, born 1898 in Manhattan
Emily, born 1902 in Queens
Leonore, born 1906 in Queens
Arthur, born 1908 in Setauket
Gertrude, born 1911 in Setauket
By 1900 Gerhard and family had moved to Queens where he became a United States citizen in 1904. In 1907 they moved 45 miles east to Setauket where Gerhard died in 1919 at the age of 60 years old.
